Commander's Report
Klaus Totzek Reporting
Martian desert as far as you can see. The last night was not so pretty cold as the one before was, just minus 11 centigrade Celsius. So, in the morning there were no frozen pipes and everybody has got the order to have a shower.
Oh What A Wonderful Feeling!!!!!!!!!!
It was the last day the TV team accompanied us and again they have made some very good shootings. We started, as every day, with a briefing. After writing some reports and check our emails, both, Patrick and Sigrid have given an interview to the TV team about their work on MDRS. When the interviews were complete, it was planed to go on a scouting EVA for the MASSE experiment. Therefore we have to search for rocky areas.
EVA 13 started at 11:48 a.m. with Sigrid and Klaus. We drove to a rock formation which is located approximate 1 kilometer away from the Habitat in north eastern direction. On this way our fist stop was a rock like structure of a white color. But when we reached it and had a closer look to the structure, we saw, that it not was a rock, but a sandy structure and proposed this area for new drillings.
So we decided to drive to a rockier hill approximate 500 meters behind. This hill was covered with a lot of different rocks of geological interest. We stopped and claimed up to the middle of the structure. Sigi was the opinion that this hill would be of interest for a next sampling EVA for the MASSE project. We set some landmarks and returned to the Habitat. The EVA ended at 1:05 p.m. Meanwhile the TV team were finish with their shootings and we said good bye to them. It was a funny work with that team, but to have a film team with you, costs a lot of time you need to do science. We held a briefing during a small dinner and decided to have another one scouting EVA for MASSE into northern direction to a rock formation, that we have called "The White Wall". EVA 14 originally should consists of Heike, Patrick and Klaus who should make the documentation. But unfortunately the ATV of Klaus could not be started and so we decided, that Heike and Patrick should go on EVA alone and Klaus returned to the Habitat.
EVA 14 started at 4:20 p.m. and was back at 7:35 p.m. It is necessary to check the ATV`s motors and breaks. Since the film team has left the station, it became more quiet on board MDRS.
Another thing was successful. We have repaired, or better said exchanged the grey water pump inside of the Habitat. We have sealed all the connections of the flexible tubes to the pump and finally the water recycling system for the flush of the liquid toilet is working.
But one thing still is confusing. Tank number five of the Greenhab, which feeds the recycling system was empty this evening.
Today it will be the very fist day, the crew has little time for relaxing and watching a film on DVD.
