Health & Safety Report
Adam Rehnberg Reporting

One crewmember is still suffering from flu and cold, his condition slowly improving. He is being monitored by the acting HSO, who is also in contact with the Flight Surgeon. The current ordination is rest and medication.

The engineering tasks carried out today included some work under the Hab. It is strongly recommended that hardhats be used when working under the Hab as the supporting cross beams present a clear risk of head injury. Furthermore, extreme care must be taken not to damage electrical, propane or water lines when using tools such as rakes and shovels under the Hab.

With the new generator installed, refueling must be carried out at least every 8 hours. While this has been standard practice on previous MDRS missions, there are now only two crewmembers available for the duty. This means that longer sleep periods will not be possible unless refueling is carried out by a single crewmember, which is less desirable from a safety standpoint. The crew has chosen to refuel at hours 08:00, 16:00 and 24:00, which maximizes the use of daylight and gives minimal disturbance to sleep periods. While acceptable in the short run, this routine should not be maintained for longer periods of time.

The Geological EVA requested by the Remote Science Team has been canceled on account of crew safety; it would not be acceptable to leave an ill crewmember alone at the Hab. Furthermore, there is no crewmember available to fill the HabCom duty. Hence, no long range EVA:s are possible at present.

With one crewmember ill and workload duties piling up, the remaining two crewmembers are feeling increasingly tired. Furthermore, the current situation does not allow for any science or simulation to be carried out, which is taking a toll on crew motivation. Even with meticulous planning, running the MDRS on a three man crew does not seem to be an option if simulation quality is to be maintained. For future missions, this should be taken into consideration by mission planners.
