Science Report
John Christian Reporting
Astronomy: Nothing to report. We still have not found the missing circuit board, and we doubt that we ever will.
Radio, Balloon, and Climber: Today we assembled the climber's 150 ft ribbon. We also tested the climber inside the hab with mixed results. Without the GPS or radio, the climber was able to climb the ribbon with no trouble. When either the GPS and/or the radio is attached to the climber, it has trouble attaching to the top touch plate. The set of magnets used as a break on the top touch plate are not sufficiently strong to hold the side of the climber with the upper contact switch to the touch plate. The additional weight of the GPS and radio, combined with the force of the contact switch, is too great for the magnets. This causes the climber to rock, with the pivot point at the magnets on the other side of the climber. The rocking motion is as follows: The contact switch will be depressed -> the motors turn off -> this results in a reduced upward force -> the reduced upward force causes the contact switch to push the climber away from the magnets -> the switch closes and causes the motors to start again -> this process continues to repeat until the climber is turned off. Even without the GPS or radio, a gentle rocking motion in the top touch plate causes the climber to rock as discussed above. This is especially disconcerting because the ribbon will be attached to a balloon which will be swaying and moving with the wind. We have a few ideas for fixing this problem and will be working on it tomorrow.
We also observed that one of the motors is not turning very forcefully and is beginning to make a clicking noise. We will investigate this further tomorrow as well.
Human Factors: The crew is continuing to take their human factors tests in the evenings.
Biology: Nothing to report.
Geology: Nothing to report.
Navigation: The waypoint database was updated and Mission Support Center Atlanta was asked to prepare a route for a future EVA.
