Engineering Upgrades/Refit: A Shopvac was found in the EVA prep room. However when it was plugged in there was a horrible whining sound. After disassembling the entire Shopvac the problem was located in the brass motor bearing. After lots of cleaning and some oiling the Shopvac was reassembled and tested. The Shopvac works fine. Judging by the status of the filter, and other signs, it appears that the unit was used to suck up water then perhaps knocked over. Muddy water had reached the motor and blower assembly then hardened there. Thus, much cleaning and scraping was needed to dislodge all the mud from the motor windings and bearings. Unfortunately the pleated paper filter was beyond cleaning. Therefore, a new filter is needed for the Shopvac (12 gallon, 5 hp, contractors series), or actual paper bags catch dust even better. We plan to write on the front of it that "filters/bags must be removed before sucking up any liquid".
We hear from a little desert birdie that tomorrow we might have a new military diesel generator. So look for results of that in tomorrows report.
