Science Report
John Christian Reporting

Astronomy: Nothing to report.

Radio, Balloon, and Climber: We were able to fix the problems with the climber today (see science report from 3/26). To solve this problem, we removed the existing metallic contact strips on the top of the climber and replaced them with larger, stiffer contacts. These contacts stick to the magnets on the top touch plate much better. We tested the new braking system successfully a number of times in the hab and should be ready to fly tomorrow. We also observed that one of the motors is dead (one of the gears in the gearbox is completely stripped). This should be OK as long as we don't lose additional motors. Today we also assembled the balloon rigging and ribbon suspension system. Pictures of this can be seen in the gallery.

Human Factors: The crew is continuing to take their human factors tests in the evenings.

Biology: Nothing to report.

Geology: Nothing to report.

Navigation: Today's EVA set a few new waypoints and re-surveyed the elevation of Phobos Peak. We also tested the use of a directional ham radio antenna (see Heidi's Journal) and the suit FRS radios for emergency direction-finding purposes.
