Log Book for April 14, 2005
Commander's Check-In
Bill Clancey Reporting

Weather: clear; low 9.1c (48.4F), high 21.2c (70.2F), bright sun

Crew Physical Status: healthy, busy; finally happy

Brief Narrative of Today's Results: Morning planning meeting to develop an astronaut EVA plan, with Boudreaux following. Carried out the EVA 1730h - 1930h. Foster-Miller removed crew tracking system, after collecting four days of data. Had a great chicken stew (slow cooker is exactly what a crew that returns at sunset needs). Also second loaf of rye bread. (Recipes thanks to John Dowding.)

The Schedule: briefing 0910h, 1945h briefing with quick planning for tomorrow.

EVA: Astronaut EVA with two relays, one deployed by ATV/ERA simulating Thibodeaux, the robot. Boudreaux followed until it accidentally got led by an astronaut into about the only rock within 10 meters (!). Astronauts continued into the area beyond Pooh's corner, over 100 m from the second relay, on a large plain, following the water. Long and successful EVA for the geologists; quit only because of sunset.

Report Transmission Schedule: CDR Journal; EVA reports in process.

Maintenance:
  1. Found that GreenHab sump pump wasn't working, which restored the tanks (thanks to Gary and others with good advice; see CDR Journal for today).
  2. The diesel fuel tank (holds 500 gallons, was 1/3rd full), overflowed at the top after it heated up during the afternoon. This may have caused the carbon monoxide sensor to go off on upper deck because hatch was open and we all smelled diesel fuel (could breadmaker trigger this sensor?). Moved sensor and all was well.
  3. Noticed about 1530h that inverter was cycling, switching back and forth between batteries and the generator. Shut off generator, found it needed oil (30 wt), which should have been changed last week. Fine tuned generator's output by examining inverter's meter. Generator is now performing fine.
  4. Cleaned ATV2 right, rear tire valve and refilled; filled low tire on ATV1.
Inventory: Just fine; wrote up inventory for the next crew.

Plans for Tomorrow: Plan another astronaut EVA to south, beyond Pooh's Corner, and carry out in the afternoon. Evening celebration of Yuri's night.

Miscellaneous: I've got rye in my breadmaker, chicken stew in my slow cooker, oil in my diesel generator, and tanks full of yucky water in my Greenhab. All is well.

Support Requested: Filters needed by Don for changing generator oil. Need more 30 wt oil. Document practical troubleshooting of generator.
