Geology Report
Kurt Klaus Reporting

I was part of EVA-11 whose primary purpose was a field test of the Mars Skin suits. You can read the details in the EVA report but suffice it to say here that the suits had system failures that taught us a great deal about how to improve the suits. We overcame the failures and enjoyed the outing anyway.

Our objective was to reach the mouth of Candor Chasma which was achieved. We then traversed up the canyon to examine the Summerville and reach the point where EVA 9 turned back. It was near that area where the top of the Summerville appeared to pinch out and the Morrison began. My observation was that the transition was rather abrupt and was bounded by a series of faults in the Summerville. I would like to understand more about this transition. I found several fine pieces of petrified wood in a conglomerate cemented to the floor of the Canyon in the Morrison, I believe. I also collected a piece of muddy brown chert and a gypsum slab with what look like mud cracks in the canyon. We also hiked the drainage up into one of the side canyons for an up-close look at the Summerville.

We then followed the drainage east as far as we could and then backtracked to locate and map an unmarked road we noted during EVA 9. The road dead ends at Easting 521937, Northing 4253440 in what looks like a conglomerate graveyard. Large boulders of conglomerate lie scattered about the underlying sandstone like tombstones. We were rewarded to a fabulous view of the Muddy Creek Canyon to the north and east. With more time we could have hiked further north for an even better better view. Time permitting, I will return to this location.

On the way there, I noted cliff forming outcrops in what must be the Morrison that looked like the same unitI noted in the north during EVA-7. I'd like to understand more about these outcrops as well.
