Log Book for April 30, 2006
Commander's Check-In
Dr. William J. Clancey Reporting

Weather: Mostly overcast, then partly sunny, thunderstorms to NE and SW, warm and increasingly windy; low 8.6c (47.5 F) high 32.2c (90 F), humidity 10% at 4:00 pm.

Crew Physical Status: Good.

Brief Narrative of Today's Results: We had planned to take off today, Sunday, but after such a fine time yesterday (capped by dinner at the Rim Rock in Torrey, where we were proudly recognized as "from Mars"), many of us worked most of the day.

I collected my notes and scripted scenarios that would demonstrate the capabilities of the power system agent in different work settings in and around the hab. I categorized and specified in rough grammatical form a dozen new voice commands that would be useful for the scenarios. Ron and I interacted by email to refine these changes, some of which will be implemented in the next week.

I also read several chapters of Asaf Degani's book, "Taming HAL," which explains how a wide variety of machine interfaces -- from ordinary watches to flight autopilot -- enter states in which user actions produce unpredictable conditions that remain invisible.

Vandi and Paul worked almost without a break on the compilation of informal PLEXIL (procedure representation language) into XML. Vandi left at 4 pm for Salt Lake City.

Rick had arrived in Hanksville last night and moved into the hab early this afternoon. We reviewed systems and I showed him how we maintain the generator.

EVA: No sims.

Plans for Tomorrow: The team will review system development for the coming week and how functionality will be demonstrated and recorded.

Report Transmission Schedule:

1. Engineering Report (timing unknown)
2. GreenHab Report

Inventory: Nothing to report.

Support Requested: If you receive this report, nothing is required. Otherwise, our Internet connection is down, evidently due to the wind.

Miscellaneous: Six people will sooner detour around an obstacle, than any one would move it out of the way.

Commander, MDRS Crew 49
