Log Book for March 7, 2004
Commander's Log
Kevin Sloan Reporting

After an extremely busy and tiring, yet productive, week, today was a much more relaxed day for Crew 25. Amy, Daniel and Jason left shortly after 10:00 on EVA 11. While out, they ventured several kilometers north-northwest of the Hab to complete the fourth geology RST mission. Recent missions have been experiencing some difficulty in finding locations specified by the RST. This might be due to the GPS using a different coordinate offset, although this has yet to be confirmed. Glitches in the mission plan such as these, while frustrating, are extremely useful. While the nature of tele-science directed by the RST should be rather easy, several unpredicted factors such as a coordinate system misalignment are arising. This work is helping to establish a solid set of protocol for future tele-science missions.

In the early afternoon Don Foutz arrived to help the crew get the diesel generator back online. The generator does not appear to have any major problems, and the cause of last night's fiasco is still unknown. The crew has switched back over to the diesel full time, and is letting Lil' Genny rest after fully powering the Hab successfully for several days.

Also this afternoon, the crew was visited by six people passing through on their ATVs. The crew was excited to have guests, and was eager to give them a tour of the facilities. The two kids were bright eyed, albeit shy, getting to see how astronauts live.

The majority of the afternoon and evening today were very laid back, as the crew was completely exhausted from the past week. The crew casually worked on reports, and a few members managed to sneak in a quick nap. After tonight's much needed relaxation, the crew should be ready to face its second week at MDRS.

Going into the final week, the crew will finally have time to work with the PSUMS rover. Also, now more experienced with the EVA procedure, the crew will attempt a couple of long range EVAs in conjunction with the RST procedure. The biggest change of this coming week will be less time required by the power situation (knock on wood).
