Log Book for March 7, 2004
General Engineering Report
Jason Schwier Reporting

Generators:

Lil Genny:
6 March 2004: 2245
Started with no difficulty. Oil full. Gas 1/2 tank.

Time: 0730
Started with no difficulty. Oil full. Gas 1/2 tank.
Shutdown: 1430

China Special:
Next Oil Change: 8 March, 1230
Time: 1430 -- performed by Don
Gas: Full
Oil: Full
Time: 2030
Gas: 50%
Oil: Full
Volts: 220
Hours: 15.0
Final Check: 2330

Today, investigation determined several issues which may have been a factor in the problem with the generator yesterday. The generator apparently was not grounded during setup on 6 March and a floating ground was possibly created. Additionally, the fuel of the generator was almost empty but not completely. Due to the relatively young age of the generator, insufficient fuel reaching the engine could create problems. We were also informed that diesel generators create sparks under heavier loads. None of the above reasons adequately explain the large amount of sparks seen yesterday though.

Tanks:
Time: 0945
Closest Tank to Hab: 57%

Water:
Time: 1535
Inside: 23 gal
Outside High: 78 cm
Outside Low: 62 cm
Shower Bucket: 1 bucket to toilet refill tank

We are still using more water than normal in an attempt to get the GreenHab working again.

ATVs:
#1 -- Oil a little low, refilled. Gas 3/4 tank. Started ok.
#2 -- Oil a little low, refilled. Gas 1/2 tank. Started ok.
#3 -- Oil ok. Gas 3/4 tank. Started ok.

The check belt lights are active on ATVs #2 and #3. The bracket holding the battery in place in ATV #2 has been missing since the beginning of the mission. It has not been a problem thus far, but we are attempting to find a solution. The bolt needed for the bracket is 1/4-28.

GreenHab:
Time: 1015
Humidity: 62%
External Temperature: 66 F

Hab: No new engineering projects completed.

Suits: Suit one was torn today on EVA 11 during the return trip to the ATVs. The tear is located between the legs and occurred within the specified parameters of normal EVA activity. The location of this tear and the pre-existing tears in suits two (now fixed) and three indicate that previous crews encountered similar problems during EVAs.
