Geology Report
Amy Blank Reporting
EVA Field Crew: Jason Schwier, Daniel Hegeman, Amy Blank Lab Imaging: Ryan L. Kobrick
Description: Today's EVA mission went to two locations. The EVA crew drove ATVs 3.9 km to near the first location and continued 0.9 km from there on foot. The first location was north of Chluda Pass and south of Brahe highway, at 12S 0517810E 4253430N. Upon reaching this location and not finding any shale nearby, the EVA crew took another path back toward the ATVs until they came upon a location with deposits of green shale. The new location was 0.25 km west of the intended location, at 12S 0518164E 4250923N. A panoramic photo of the location was taken. Then two samples of shale were selected. For each sample, a close-up photo of the sample with a ruler and compass was taken. After collecting the two samples at this location, the EVA crew returned to the ATVs. On the way back, they noted a location with very large deposits of shale at 12S 0518164E 4250923N. Once the EVA crew returned to the ATVs, they drove farther down Schriaparelli road to a point near the second sampling location. From there they walked 0.1 km on foot to the second location, at 12S 0518168E 4250930N. At this point, another panoramic photo was taken, and two samples of brown shale with close-up photos were collected.

First location, the western inlet of tank wash

Second location, Chluda Pass
| Sample 11-1 12S 0518164E 4250920N: |
Description: Gray-green flaky layered rock. Found on a hilltop of brown sand and dirt.
Rationale for Collection: Samples of shale were requested by RST. This location had several small piles of shale, so this sample was chosen from one pile.
Hypothesis: Sample broke into layers, but not cleanly. Possibly sandstone/shale mix. |

| Sample 11-2 12S 0518163E 4250921N: |
Description: Thin gray-green layered rock. Broken off a large chunk sitting on a hilltop of tan sandy dirt.
Rationale for Collection: Samples of shale were requested by RST. This piece was from another pile in the first location.
Hypothesis: Breaks nicely into layers. Shale. |

| Sample 11-3 12S 0518166E 4250927N: |
Description: Flat brown rock. Found on a rocky slope in the second location.
Rationale for Collection: Samples of shale from this location were requested by RST.
Hypothesis: Breaks nicely into layers. Shale. |

| Sample 11-4 12S 0518166E 4250927N: |
Description: Flat gray-tan rock. Found at the top of a rocky hill.
Rationale for Collection: Samples of shale from this location were requested by RST.
Hypothesis: Sample did not break into layers at all, only chunks. Possibly because it was very thin and already only one layer, or maybe sample is sandstone instead of shale. |
