Log Book for March 8, 2004
General Engineering Report
Jason Schwier Reporting
Generators:
Lil Genny:
Time: 1300
Started with no difficulty. Oil full. Gas 1/2 tank.
China Special:
Next Oil Change: 9 March, 1230
Time: 0645
Gas: Empty
Oil: 3/4
Volts: 220 V
Hobbs Meter: 25
Follow-up checks at 1230 to change oil, 1830 to refuel, 2330 to refuel for night.
As per the instructions for the new generator, the oil was changed after about 24 hours of use. This marks the second 24-hour oil change of three. Tomorrow, the final 24-hour change will occur at 1230. Afterward, a 48-hour cycle will be employed for oil changes.
LP Tanks:
Time: 0650
Furnace Tank: 55%
Water:
Time: 1845
Inside: 35 gal
Outside High: 74 cm
Outside Low: 58 cm
Shower Bucket: 0.8 buckets to toilet refill tank
Water used previous day: 25 gal
We are still using more water than normal in an attempt to get the GreenHab working again. To aid in calculating the amount of water used, I am adding previous day water used field for easy comparison.
ATVs:
#1 - Oil ok. Gas full. Started ok.
#2 - Oil ok. Gas full. Started ok.
#3 - Oil ok. Gas full. Started ok.
The check belt lights are active on ATVs #2 and #3. The bracket holding the battery in place in ATV #2 has been missing since the beginning of the mission. It has not been a problem thus far, but we are attempting to find a solution. The bolt needed for the bracket is 1/4"-28.
GreenHab:
Time: 1015
Relative Humidity: 65%
External Temperature: 62 F
Hab: The shelves on the upper deck are becoming increasingly crowded with new materials. The crew would like to install a new shelf to hold DVDs, books, and manuals. This will allow future expansion and more storage space for all crews. There are large pieces of 3/4" and 1/2" plywood and L-shaped wall-brackets in the junkyard. Three possible locations are being considered for the shelf (or shelves, if desired): above the window port between the two kitchen cabinets (bearing approximately 80-degrees), above one of the already installed shelves on the southern arc, and a vertical shelf around the ladder hole.
Suits: Amy repaired suit one today. Her work is exemplary and the suit looks brand-new. With this tear and the others in mind, the crew suggests some type of reinforcement in the area between the legs. This area of the suit is subject to more spontaneous forces than almost all others and would most likely benefit from another layer of material.
Notes: With the frequent oil changes for the China Special, more motor oil will be needed. There is currently enough oil for tomorrow's change but not enough for the change on Thursday.
