Close up of Sample 12-1 in field |
Description: Found on North-South seam dipping at 20° angle. Located approximately West from panoramic image center and can be seen with a neon orange bag. Abundant small samples were found in a mud matrix. The coal is a dark grey and when submersed in water it did not float. Following proper safety procedures and wearing protective equipment, a combustion test was performed. The coal was smoking black as it was burning and the flame (when low) was blue. When removed there was a noticeable orange-red glow. A small fire in a candle was built with the coal and when tap water was dripped onto the flame a large burst of flame erupted. See video clip below:
Rationale for Collection: As directed by RST.
Hypothesis: Bituminous Coal.

Close up of Sample 12-2 in field |
Description: Found near drop-off on West-East outcrop of sandstone base or bedrock dipping at a 20° angle. The colour is light beige and the sample is fine grained. The sample was found approximately North-East from the panoramic image center.
Rationale for Collection: As directed by RST.
Hypothesis: Sandstone.

Difficulties Encountered and Lessons Learned:
- Sandstone formed the base of most of the ground in the area except most of the samples that could have been taken were slate. The region was glorious and the walk into the wash was a one of a kind experience. Following the natural route of the water flow was quite exciting with amazing overhangs in area and interesting cuts in the sides of the wash.
- The Water Drop Pool was quite impressive as it was still frozen. Below is an image of the Ice.
- Black lichen was found in a shaded area on the South side of the wash as seen in the picture below. We will leave this one for the botanists!
