Log Book for March 8, 2004
GreenHab Report
Dennis Creamer Reporting

Readings:

Time: 10:15
Inside Temp: 91F
Outside Temp: 62 F
Relative Humidity: 65%

Normal chores in the GreenHab were performed. The chores are pumping gray water into the tanks, watering the plants, and taking temperature/humidity readings.

Measurements Taken:

Tank #1: pH = 8.4 Ammonia = 5 Nitrate = 15 Nitrite = .5
Tank #5: pH = 8.4 Ammonia = 0 Nitrate = 10 Nitrite = 0

These reading were taken using the freshwater scale, as instructed. Color match was inexact, but readings were interpolated, and approximated as closely as possible to the color scale. The coloration for pH in particular, was so intense as to indicate that the actual pH was even higher than the 8.4 value, (highest value given on the color scale).

The sump pump was tested this morning, with flow into Trickling Filter Reservoir #1 seen. The water level in Trickling Filter Reservoir #2 is so low as to preclude any further movement to the tank system. Four gallons of water were added to the Hab TST (Toilet Supply Tank), from the lab sink Drip container.

Results from evaporation experiment: Approximately 100 mL of tank #5 water was placed in a petri dish, and moved to the table near the tanks on March 4. The water had evaporated completely, today. The petri dish has a diameter of nine cm, therefore a surface area of approximately 64 square cm. The small amount of residue, found within the petri dish indicates a low salt content of the Tank #5 water.
