Engineering Report
Susmita Mohanty & Edwin Loosveldt Reporting
The day passed without any major hurdles. In the morning before heading back to SLC, Dennis of Crew 25/Mission Support Staff showed us how to operate the main power generator, refuel, and fill oil. The refueling is done thrice daily - every 8 hours. The oil change is done every other day.
The main power generator, christened "China Special" by the previous crew, was refueled at the scheduled times i.e. 7 am, 3 pm and will again be topped off at 11 pm for the night run. There are 2 yellow cans with diesel that are used to refuel "China Special".
These 2 yellow cans -- after the 3 pm refueling were nearly empty, so we looked around for more yellow cans and couldn't find any so we thought we were out of diesel and therefore sent an email to Mission Support and Tony to call Don Foutz (read HAB LIFE SUPPORT) of the Whispering Sands Motel here in Hanksville to send more supplies of diesel. Don came over around 6 pm and showed us where the diesel reserves were - they are in the red drums on the trailer behind the HAB, and there is a hand pump on the red drums that is used to fill up the empty yellow cans. The cans have been topped off and we are cool.
Tomorrow, we plan to test the back-up generator codenamed "Lil' Genny". We were surprised to find that "Lil' Genny" uses the gasoline in the red cans located on the trailer behind the HAB (as opposed to the diesel in the yellow cans that is fed in to "China Special"). Apparently, "China Special" was sparking badly one night, and Crew 25 had to swap it with "Lil' Genny". So we want to make sure we are prepared for the swap if necessary.
End of Generator Report.
There is nothing to report on the Water Pump operations for the day - they went well.
