Log Book for March 15, 2004
EVA Report
Jamon Neilson Reporting

Duration: 11:12 -- 12:15 (1 hour, 3 minutes)

Participants: Edwin Loosveldt, Richard Humphreys, Susmita Mohanty, Jamon Neilson (Observer, cameraman)

Route: Remained near Hab

Objectives/Work Done: During EVA 1, we remained near the Hab to become familiar with the suits. We spent a considerable amount of time learning the procedures for donning the environmental suits. The crew walked approximately 30 meters to the west of the Hab, and examined some of the rock formations. Edwin set up a tripod to take 360 degree panoramic pictures that will be taken every morning and night. Dust content will deduced by analyzing: 1 -- color, 2 -- the phase function (the sky intensity as function of azimuth). Richard collected soil samples that will be used to plant seeds brought by Jamon from Utah State University. Several types of soil will be collected to grow a variety of crops. Overall the EVA team was very enthusiastic about its first adventure out side the Hab.

Weather: Clear Skies, beautiful blue day.

Maximum Distance Travel: 30 meters

Lessons Learned:
  • Donning Suits
  • Becoming familiar with mobility and weight of equipment
  • Using the communications systems.
  • Placing the tripod for the camera. We discovered that the anchors need to be driven in about a meter deep to keep from being pulled out.
  • We also conducted several excursions without the suits to become used to riding the ATVs and to scout out possible EVA sights to explore.
