Log Book for March 17, 2004
EVA-5 Report
Jamon Neilson Reporting

Duration: 5:13 -- 6:24 (1 hour, 11 minutes)

Participants: Reece Lumsden, Jamon Neilson, Richard Humphreys, Edwin Loosveldt

Route: Hab to 12S 0518247 UTM 4253697, (Lowell Hwy, Brahe Hwy)

Equipment: Camera, GPS, Maps, Way Point Logs

Objective: The EVA was conducted out of simulation today. We used the time to scout out the area to determine where we want to conduct tomorrow's EVAs. The maps in the Hab have nick names written on them from previous crews. Many of them are humors to read and describe various geological features, roads, and terrain. Previous EVA waypoints appear to be in two groups: one set is around the graded road named the "Lowell Hwy" that runs north to south, the other is on top of Skyline Rim. We had to search several maps used by other crews to determine how they got on top of the ridge. Following Lowell Hwy, we searched for two connecting routes Brahe Hwy, and Chudla Pass, that leads to the top of Skyline Rim. During EVA 5, we where unable to locate the turn off of the main road to Chudla Pass, but successfully found The Brahe Hwy. The crew is feeling much more confident with the general layout of the area, and navigating with the GPS. Reece and Jamon, spent the evening marking all of the current waypoints on a map that are in the data base. Reece notice that the handle bars on one of the ATVs was crooked about 5 degree making it a little awkward to drive.

Weather: Clear skies, beautiful sunset

Maximum distance traveled from Hab: 11.8 km, round trip

Lessons Learned:
  1. Use of GPS, and locating waypoints
  2. Reviewed previous mission EVAs
  3. Locating a route to up part of Skyline Rim
  4. EVA mission planning
