Log Book for March 23, 2004
EVA-13 Report
Jamon Neilson Reporting

Duration: 11:35 to 1:45 (2 hour, 10 minutes)

Participants: Jamon Neilson, Reece Lumsden

Route:
Hab to Repeater – 2
12 S 0515235 UTM 4251186

Equipment: Camera, Maps, Rock Hammer, GPS

Objective: We found some old documentation indicating that there was a second repeater station located 2 miles south west of the Hab. Commander Reece decide that it might be a good idea to inspect its condition and see if it could improve our communication capabilities. We programmed the GPS to take us to the repeater station, and again we ran into the problem of finding a route that would take us there.

We chose a general direction which we thought would take us there. However, we ran into a ridge that we could not find anyway of getting on top of. Since our progress was impeded we decide to explore a canyon. As we came out we noticed storm clouds coming into our area, and we made the decision to return to the Hab. After some discussion we think that it would be a good idea to have the Mars Society develop a web based data system that crews could log into, to enter information (or access) on way points, routes, geographic and biological descriptions. It would be a rather simple fix to collate information gathered from crew rotations.

Right now the current system of using Excel spread sheets and crew reports is scattered and difficult to sort through. Some crews have used computer programs to keep a record of where they been, however there is no current working program, or data base, on any of the Hab's computers. If there was a working software program it is doubtful that it would be maintained if it where left here at the Hab. The website seems to be the only consistence method of record keeping. It should be expanded upon and improved.

Weather: Thunderstorms, windy

Maximum distance traveled from Hab: 2.92 km

Lessoned Learned:
  1. Reviewed previous mission EVAs
  2. New method of record keeping should be employed using the Mars Society website
  3. EVA mission planning
  4. Endurance hike in suits
