Commander's Check-In
Alejandro R. Diaz Reporting
Crew Status: Members of Crew 27 are very excited, but also tired, after having completed three EVAs today.
Daily Recap: Today was our first day of full simulation. We feel the pre-simulation training and tasks performed prior to today's EVAs gave us great latitude to successfully complete today's EVAs. The intent of EVA-1 (McCarthy and Foltyn) was maintenance of a remote radio near the hab. EVA-2 (Collins and Wardlow) had as its goal to identify an anomalous object that had been identified by EVA 1 from a hill near the hab. Lastly, EVA-3 (Russell and Diaz) was utilized for 'Hazardous Material" Disposal. These EVAs are discussed in the EVA Report.
However, given my participation in EVA3, I'll add a few words. The first thing that comes to mind is the high temperature that needs to be endured by the crewmembers doing EVAs. Yes, there is a ventilation system, but it still gets hot. Granted, we did not have to take on the long journey that EVA2 did, but EVA3 gave us enough heat to deal with. Second, the wait on the airlock was definitely a good simulation of space egress. Jim Russell and I talked, and the time went by rather quickly. Lastly, after putting on the suit and egressing the airlock, I felt I could really imagine being on Mars. It was simply amazing.
Tomorrow's Plan: Tomorrow morning we will proceed with a similar schedule as today. We plan to be in full sim and conduct two EVAs, which will include the use of the ATVs. The crew will also be interviewed by journalist, Wil McCarthy, as part of a story he is writing.
Daily Reports: The following reports should be in by 21:30.
