Commander's Check-In
Alejandro R. Diaz Reporting
Crew Status: Members of Crew 27 are in good spirits, but a little frustrated by the storm that hit us today, which prevented planned EVAs.
Daily Recap: Today was our third day of full simulation. In the morning, EVA-7 (Russell, Collins, and Wardlow, along with Foltyn and Diaz as Habcom) was intended to relocate and bring back the "Shiny Thing" observed by previous EVAs, and to practice riding the ATVs with EVA suits on. On this EVA, it was also detected that ATV #1 had a serious oil leak and was no longer able to shift gears. We contacted Mission Support and they're working on this issue. During the morning, crewmembers Foltyn and Diaz also worked on space suit maintenance, while McCarthy worked on the remote radio.
In the afternoon, the plan called for EVA-8 to continue maintenance of the remote radio by the hab, and EVA-9 was to conduct further ATV EVAs. However, these EVAs were cancelled after a storm hit us soon after lunch.
As a result, the crew proceeded to perform various maintenance tasks in the hab and also to complete a 1-hour Personality Questionnaire. The questionnaire is part of a continued Human Factors experiment being conducted by Dr. Dawson from the Australian National University.
Additional Comments: EVA-7 analysis (for details of all the EVAs, refer to the EVA Report) -- For this EVA, I requested that crewmembers wear latex gloves below their gloves to better simulate the stiffness of present EVA gloves. This followed results from yesterday's EVA glove accessibility analysis with The Boeing Company ISS EVA's connector mock-up, in which it was evident that utilizing only one set of ski gloves was not an accurate assumption. However, comments from today's EVA-7, yielded that the addition of the latex gloves did not make any difference in their "glove stiffness." Thus, for tomorrow, we will first put our gloves on and then wrap each finger with duct tape. We will then report on the results of doing this. Again, we don't want them too tight, but we do want to make them thick and stiff-ish.
General Concerns:
- ATV #1 needs servicing for steering and transmission problems.
- We only have six working suit radios, but we have problems matching them up with working headsets.
- We only have five of the backpacks working.
- Remote radio is still being maintained.
It should be noted that Mission Support has been informed of these issues and they have provided, or are still providing, their recommendations.
Tomorrow's Plan: Tomorrow's schedule calls for EVAs with the utilization of the ATVs. We want to feel comfortable riding the ATVs locally with space suits on, before we go long-range. We will continue with our fourth day of full simulation.
Daily Reports: The following reports should be in by 21:30.
- Commander's Check In (this report) -- Alejandro R. Diaz
- XO/Journalist Report -- William McCarthy
- GreenHab Report -- James Russell/Peter Collins
- Engineering Report -- James Russell/Peter Collins
