Commander's Check-In
Alejandro R. Diaz Reporting
Crew Status: The crew is in very high spirits after having completed a very productive day.
Daily Recap: Today was our sixth day of full simulation. In the morning, EVA-10 (McCarthy, Foltyn, and Wardlow, along with Diaz as Habcom) was directed at the continued maintenance of the remote radio by the hab. EVA-11 (Russell and Collins, along with Diaz as Habcom) was a full ATV EVA and was intended to explore the northern Lowell Highway and the eastern Cactus Canyon. EVA-12 was also an ATV EVA (McCarthy and Foltyn, along with Diaz as Habcom) and was intended for maintenance of the R2 Repeater at Skyline Rim.
In the afternoon, EVA-13 (Diaz and Wardlow, along with Foltyn as Habcom) was the last EVA of the day. This also was a full ATV EVA and it was intended to obtain water samples from Muddy Creek at Eden. GreenHab maintenance and repair tasks conducted by Russell and Collins, also took place in the afternoon. They also attempted to jump-start Lil'Jenny with the ATV#1 battery.
Additional Comments:
EVA-13 Comments: The intent of this EVA was to reach Muddy Creek at Eden and to obtain water samples. This ATV EVA was an adventure. We came across some very difficult terrain that challenged both Wardlow and myself. The way up was a relatively smooth ride, except for a particular ridge that was an absolute challenge. However, with serenity, we were both able to overcome it. We got to Eden in about an hour and our joy was tremendous. With the great training of our EVA Commander, we had successfully utilized the navigation tools that he taught us. We recorded our waypoint, took samples, and some pictures. And then it was time to hit the road back. This could've been an easy task if we had come the same way we came up. However, we decided to take another road back that was significantly more difficult. Nonetheless, we always knew where we were going and we made it to the hab by dinner. In essence, the navigation training we received was essential and the key to the success of this EVA.
For details of these EVAs, refer to the EVA Report.
Tomorrow's Plan: Tomorrow's schedule may call for a final EVA to the Remote Radio Station and for EVAs with the utilization of the ATVs to Lith Canyon.
