Commander's Check-In
Alejandro R. Diaz Reporting
Crew Status: Despite morning EVA cancellations due to unstable weather, the crew is in good spirits after being able to successfully complete two EVAs in the afternoon.
Daily Recap: Today's morning schedule called for an ATV EVA up Lowell Highway to Muddy Creek and for an EVA to Phobos Peak. Unfortunately, unstable weather did not allow for these EVAs to take place. Instead, the crew proceeded to conduct several tasks inside the Hab, which included, but were not limited to, coming up with the Shopping List for Crew 28, updating the DVD and Book List, updating GreenHab procedures, and designing Hab cabin-door name tags. In addition, GreenHab maintenance and repair tasks, along with generator tasks were completed. Also, the laboratory inventory task was initiated.
In the afternoon, after weather stabilized, the crew proceeded to conduct EVA-16 (Wardlow, Collins, Diaz, Russell, McCarthy, and Foltyn). This EVA was directed at reaching Phobos Peak summit and at taking panoramic pictures of the terrain surrounding the Hab. After the completion of EVA-16, Russell and Foltyn initiated EVA-17. This was an ATV EVA and was intended at familiarizing the crew with the terrain that will be encountered in the ATV EVA to Muddy Creek via Lowell Highway, and also at searching for meteorites.
Additional Comments:
EVA-16: This EVA was a hike up to Phobos Peak. From a personal point of view, it was an ideal scenario for a demonstration of teamwork. Usually, we only go out on teams of two, or three at most, but today, it was five crewmembers in EVA suits. We all helped and guided each other to the summit, and I felt a real sense of accomplishment as we all reached the top. I know, I've said this before, but it is genuinely a great pleasure to be part of such a talented and hard-working team.
For details of these EVAs, refer to the EVA Report.
Tomorrow's Plan: Tomorrow's schedule calls for a Media Visit from Travis Reed from the Salt Lake City Associated Press. Weather permitting an ATV EVA up Lowell Highway to Muddy Creek will take place.
