Time: 1800
Inside Temp: 65 deg F / 18 deg C
Outside Temp: 52 deg F / 11 deg C
Relative Humidity: 65%

Minimum Temp: 57 deg F / 14 deg C
Maximum Temp: 75 deg F / 24 deg C
(Note: Temperature readings were taken in Fahrenheit; Max/min T will now be taken from Channel 1 of the Oregon Scientific unit. Just remember to clear the max/min values at the end of every day by pressing "Memory" for 3 seconds.)

Normal chores in the GreenHab were performed on each of these occasions.
  • Both aerators are working, one is in Tank #2 and one in Tank #4.
  • Only air bubbles in Tank #2 & 4
  • All plants were sprayed with water and fed. Currently the carrots are growing, and some radishes have sprouted in the last 2 days.
  • The sump pump is connected to a timer which activates the system at 12:00 hours and 00:00 hours.
  • The plants in the buckets have died. As we reported yesterday, there was only a layer of black pudding remaining. I served chocolate pudding for lunch today. Do you think they noticed?
  • The plants in Tank #4 look like they are doing well.
  • Water in tank #5 is running normally.
  • Turned on recycle pump for 15 minutes to a 1/2hr to remove algae from the top of Tank One.
  • The TST tank is still being filled as required by the pump.
  • TST water filter flowrate is still acceptable.
Additional Chores:
  • Nitrification/Denitrification Experiment.
Operation State: 6hr ON/OFF cycles with a stir bar providing aeration.
Day 0: Soapy water (1g/l concentration of soap) in a 2L beaker with 1700ml of water was inoculated with 25 ml of concentrated solids from the underground grey water tank. Soapy water of this concentration was shown to have: pH of 7.8; NH3 3 mg/L, NO2 0mg/L, NO3 10mg/L.
    Day 2: Took readings: pH 7.8, NH3 0.25 mg/L, NO2 0mg/L, NO3 0mg/L. Added 2.4 g of Oasis soap/ 1600ml which is ~ NH3 4.5 mg/L, NO2 0mg/L, NO3 15 mg/L. Nitrification/denitrification appears to be occurring; however, a control will be started to verify this.

  • TST work - Float Switch
Results: The existing fluid level sensor or high level alarm does not turn off the power to the TST fill pump when actuated. It is not easy to disassemble or troubleshoot, because it was placed in with RTV or aquarium sealant.
Action: Install a new float switch per instructions upon locating a DC float switch.
Open Issues:
  • "Hab Power" in the Greenhab:
Status: HAB POWER is from the solar panel pod. The SOLAR PANEL setting is actually from the 12 VDC power supply under the TST.
Action: These will be returned to their original labeling in the coming days.

  • Electrical Diagram of the Greenhab
Status: We have finished mapped the wiring of the Greenhab to 99% of the system. We are still updating the electrical flow diagram in Power Point. This file will be uploaded to our Crew 27 directory along with other relevant procedures in the coming days
Proposed Action: Finish mapping the Greenhab in the coming days.

  • Tacking down loose wires
Proposed Action: will be done in the coming days.

  • The Southern louvers need to open more for proper ventilation.
Status: 5 solar panels are connected to the solar pod and routed to the Greenhab fuse box for use by the DC devices, including the Southern Fan.
Question Should I add the working solar panel that is just resting unconnected in the Northern Hab to this system. 4/6/04 my only concern is the load through the Sunsaver-10 controller.

  • Yellow Laptop as part of HOBO logger system
Open Issue: The yellow laptop hab computer has some port malfunction which is preventing the HOBO download.

  • Treatment system appears not to be removing nitrate.
Status: Reinnoculated trickling filter #2. Added water hyacinths and water lettuce yesterday.
Action: Continue to monitor system. Will try to add bacterial solids from 110 gallon tank to trickling filter tomorrow.
