Commander's Check-In
Gus Frederick Reporting
Crew Status: Crew is in good spirits, boosted by the fact that we now have power restored, and we have entered into full sim mode.
Daily Recap: We awoke to a dark Hab, being without power for over 24 hours. I drove into Hanksville and relay our status to Mission Support via the Whispering Sand's lobby network. While there, most of the parts to repair the China Special generator arrived. But not all of the parts. Initially, Don said we would most likely be in the dark for another day. But his skill managed to reduce this to just several hours.
Upon returning to the Hab, I was greeted by Chief Engineer Gregorio in a Mars Suit, adjusting the GreenHab solar system. Kathleen was in the Hab suiting up and she and Gregorio soon took off on a short training ATV EVA. I got to work on the Salad Machine with the assistance of Greg Michael. We transferred the Brita units with the sprouts we planted yesterday into the GreenHab nursery section, and filled up the tanks with the nutrient solution I mixed the day before. The timer is functioning perfectly, and the system is now on automatic mode. Daily maintenance of this system will consist of checking the screen on the overflow drain for accumulated particles, and making sure the solution level is not too low. The sprouts are already poking through the Santiam Soil Sim.
Around this time, Don arrived with the restored China Special, and with the help of the Crew, he had the power system restored. We decided to go into sim at 1600 hours at that point. I returned the spare photovoltaic array to its location in the nursery section of the GreenHab. GreenHab director Gary Fisher sent a detailed email on some proposed tweaks to the system, which we will act upon over the next several days.
Once Steve returned from town with the supplies, we went into sim. The GreenHab system was getting low in water, so at the instructions of Chief Engineer Gregorio, we all took showers to help prime the system. Tank 5 is still a bit low from our days without full power, but it does seem to be restoring itself to normal.
We just finished a delicious dinner of chicken, rice and carrots prepared by Kathleen. We toasted the start of our sim, and are now preparing our daily reports. The reports from the last several days are completed, and will be posted for review by Mission Support within the next hour or so.
Tomorrow's Plan: We plan to experience our first full-sim EVA. The location will be determined shortly, but will relatively short in distance. I plan to start another round of lettuce sprouts, as the MicroTom tomatoes have so far failed to sprout. We also plan to get the GreenHab weather station up and running, so that we will be able track variables automatically. This will give us more than just the current three readings a day, so that we will be able see actual trends, as I plan to set it to an interval of 10 minutes. This data can then be downloaded either daily or weekly.
Daily Reports: The following reports should be in by 21:30.
