Log Book for April 20, 2004
Commander's Check-In
Gus Frederick Reporting

Crew Status: Crew is in good spirits despite our lack of mobility due to the defective ATV.

Daily Recap: I have decided that since we only have one functional ATV, it would not be safe to send out one person, so we spent the day doing various chores around the station. Kathleen and I spent the morning in the GreenHab getting things squared away. I suggested and the GreenHab Team agreed that we should move some of the ever-expanding azolla crops into Tank 1, to help reduce the ever-present algae problem. I moved the screen in Tank 2 back about 30 cm to accomodate more of the floaters. We also put black plastic around Tanks 2 and 3, as these tanks are made of a translucent white plastic which allows light in. Hopefully with these measures and the floating plants, we will soon have the algae under control somewhat. As directed we also added airstones to Tanks 3 and 1 to help with thermal mixing. I also discovered an aquarium ozone generator, and set that up to run in Tank 5, the end of the line before the water goes back to the toilet.

Meanwhile in the North Nursery section, Kathleen cleaned up much of the extra unused stuff, trash, etc. and generally organized stuff. I also relocated and leveled the inside PAR sensor for the weather station to the North Wall above the fan, to better record light levels within the Nursery. We also tacked down more loose wires and I secured the other various sensors with plastic clamps and zip-ties.

Inside the Hab, Alyssa continued with her organization of the tools, and she and Greg Michael polished the Mars Suit helmets. Our only EVA today was with the Pressurized Rover for a run to town to retrieve the "Cookie Supply Module" sent by FedEx to the Whispering Sands by Steve's wife Debi. Steve had arrived with a huge supply of cookies baked by his Mom. When she heard that we all enjoyed and appreciated them, she proceeded to bake a bunch more, and Debi FedExed them to us. Regular EVA procedures were employed.

Tomorrow's Plan: I plan to start the GreenHab culturing process, as per directions from the RST. Addionally I will evaluate the small unused tower computer to see if it will work with the data loggers. If it does not, I will leave the Compaq unit I brought along, as it does work. We also plan several short pedestrian EVAs to locations we scouted earlier during our GPS training.
