Journalist Report
Danielle Cormier Reporting
Last night, after all reports are turned in, Jon gave us an awesome presentation about all current and upcoming robotic missions to Mars. Then the crew settled in to watch a few episodes of the TV series "Firefly" before going to bed.
This morning, after a late start, Jon and Olathe suited up to finish cutting the wood for the power converter shelf. A 15-minute EVA was revealed to be sufficient to finish this task, which had been cut short yesterday by the incoming rainstorm.
In the afternoon, Jon, Olathe and Lealem suited up to go test out wireless internet connectivity in the area surrounding the Hab. The objective of this was to try to figure out if Wi-Fi systems could be used during EVAs. Connectivity was found to drop off when the crew was about .75 kilometer from the Hab. Meanwhile, in the Hab, Danielle painted part of a wall in the washroom and Melissa and Randy cleaned the upper level of the Hab. Then, at about 4 pm, Danielle noticed that the generator didn't seem to be supplying power to the Hab anymore; further examination revealed that the generator had shut itself off, and attempts to restart it were unsuccessful. The EVA crew was advised, and since Jon is chief engineer and therefore in charge of the generator, all three EVA crewmembers headed back to the Hab. Meanwhile, back at the Hab, Randy and Danielle powered down everything that they could in order to conserve the electricity that was left in the batteries.
After the EVA had come back in the Hab and Jon had removed his spacesuit, Jon, Danielle and Lealem headed back out to the generator to try to figure out exactly what was wrong with it. After several more startup attempts and a bunch of head scratching, Jon found the problem: a solenoid had vibrated itself loose, cutting off the engine's fuel supply. This was corrected and the generator was finally restarted. And there was much rejoicing. Jon's our hero of the day!
Tonight's plans are still in flux, but the possibility of throwing a dance party has been discussed.
