Educators Report
Jared Szymanoski Reporting

Today was the second day of class. We started the day out as usual doing class work. Everyone was independently working very well, so I gave Gino a math lesson on the white board. Madeline decided to type her science review questions which I had no problem with. We again had our usual five minute break half way though class.

They all still seemed enthusiastic about working. I have yet to see anyone show a negative attitude towards learning here in the "Hab". Iaho-Anut was very quiet today. She stayed on task, and worked very hard. Today is the first day in simulation, so I can't wait to see how their behavior will change when they realize that they are stuck in here for two weeks.

After class we took a field trip to Box Canyon. After a short drive up, the children got out a plastic bag, pencil, and some paper. They learned about the geology of this particular location. They took notes on different types of rocks and layers. They had to draw a sketch of Box Canyon, as well as label the strata. Next, they were allowed to pick out several rocks they liked and identify them using a GeoTechnical Gauge. They also got a lesson on how to use the geologist rock hammer. Tonight they will be surprised with a pop quiz on the material that they have learned today.

Later in the day, we decided to do our journal time. We usually do this late at night before bed, but today we wanted to get them started on it earlier. Hopefully by starting the journal earlier in the day, they will write more and be able to remember material more vividly.

All the kids are doing great; they all are well ahead of where I expected them to be. They still are behaving as if they were in school, but I expect this to change very soon.
