Educators Report
Jared Szymanoski Reporting

We started the school day off early, as usual. Again, I had no problem getting them to work. We did our academic subjects for about an hour, and then we started music and science for Iahu-Anat. I taught Madeline how to write her trumpet music on the computer unto which we have software for. She wrote the beginning to "Mary Did You Know." Angelina was playing a song "Chester", and soon got jealous, so I wrote up the flute part to "Mary Did You Know" so that she could play along as well. I gave Gino a pair of drum sticks and let him drum on the pillow to keep the noise down, as well as to teach him how to drum without relying on the rebound of the drum. During this time Iahu-Anat was doing her biology work in the "GreenHab". At the end of the class I showed them my skills on the flute and trumpet, which is almost non-existent.

Later in the day we went on our first EVA. We learned how all the analogue suits work and how to properly put them on. After we waited in the air lock for five minutes in order to adhere to simulation, we began our routine inspection of the ATVs. We had a problem with ATV-2, but after a slow ride, we got to our location where Veronica gave a lesson in geology. The kids took notes and participated in some hands on field work in identifying some rocks.

When we came back from the EVA we had our second classroom session. This session did not start out very well. They were very tired and did not want to work at all. It was hard to get them started, but after a while they where working again.

They started out the day very excited, which I expect to be because we where going on an EVA, but after the EVA the school session did not work. I think we need to plan to do all class work before we go on EVAs so this doesn't happen again. They where just too tired and simply not motivated to work. They still seem happy to be here, and I am having a great time working with them.
