Log Book for March 9, 2007
Engineering Report
Artemis & Waller Reporting

Generator/Electricity:

Casper: not used
Wendy Hobbs Meter: 2921.5 hrs (+13.7 hrs since yesterday)
Voltage: 123 VAC
Frequency: 60 Hz
Oil Level: 7/8
Oil Pressure: 40 PSI
Water Drained: no
Notes/Comments: the generator varies a lot at the moment. 118-123 volts, 58-63 Hz and back, while you are standing and looking at it. at the same time it does give a lot of current to the Hab. 50-60 percent rate.

Xantrex Inverter/Dynasty Batteries:

Time - Voltage (Temp Comp) - Load - Temp - Generator Running
18.25 - 26.7 VDC - 15C - Yes
Notes/Comments: this morning I shut the generator off at 7.30 the load was 5 and the batteries were charged up to 25 however there had been temperatures below zero last night and the battery temperature readout gave 'OL' (off line?) I changed the setting for LBCO (= low battery cut off) from 21.0 to 20.5 (menu 11C) to prevent the inverter software going crazy again. However that strategy did not work. the inverter went in error mode anyway. I of course could just start the generator after 1 3/4 hour, but i wanted to give Jolly Green a bit of a rest. In the end we lasted 6.5 hours on just the batteries. This was with a very light load of 7. We had turned of the air conditioning as it was blowing too much and too loud. Starting up the generator was a bit of an anomaly. The solenoid crank was in a different (lower) position and the trick with the end of a sledgehammer did not work. Thankfully the generator did start up on its own. Don't ask us why and how. It does however verify that the anomaly we experienced two days ago during the night really was possible. The generator can turn itself on without help from a person with a sledgehammer.

Fuel Status (as of 08:13):

Diesel: Approximate Reading: 3/4
Notes/Comments: it is closer to 3/4 than to 7/8 but still above 3/4
Propane Tank: Approximate Reading: 54% (540 gallons = 2044.1 L)
Gasoline Quantity Remaining: 86 gallons = 325.5 L (no change since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: Veronica tried to use ATV#1. But the ATV would no longer shift to anything then rear. As Veronica did not feel up to driving backward to tank she parked it at the GreenHab. The ATV has a broken gear shaft. We will look into it as the KAWASAKI ATVs have a very comprehensive manual in the Hab.

Oil Status:

GenSet Quantity: 1 quart (no change since yesterday)
ATV Quantity: 4 quarts (no change since yesterday)
V'ger Quantity: 24 quarts (no change since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: please resupply us with the synthetic oil for the generator. I did not add any oil today.

Water Status:

Outside Potable Water Tank Level: 200 gallons = 757.1 L
Trailer Potable Water Tank Level: 50 cm from the base
Potable Water Meter Reading: 20788.5 gallons = 78692.8 L (+66.1 gallons since yesterday)
Out to Toilet Meter Reading: 6715.0 gallons = 25419.0 L (+22.6 gallons since yesterday)
In to GreenHab Meter Reading: 7705.4 gallons = 29168.0 L (no change since yesterday)
Dishwasher Runs: 0
Notes/Comments: the potable water meter reading seems wrong to me. it is what the meter says, but i think it is wrong nevertheless.

GreenHab:

Status: This morning the gray water tank had overflowed due to the fact that the hose leading to the ditch was frozen. I filled the GreenHab tanks and got rid of the ice slivers inside the hose. Note: with the amount of fresh water we are using we need to move water from the gray water tank to the GreenHab 3 times a day.
Crops Watered: yes
Crop Condition: the re-potted plants need clearly more water then before to adjust from the re-potting. pumped out the gray water tank twice today already.

Transportation:

V'ger Used: no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: good
Odometer: 184310 miles (no change since yesterday)

Kawasaki ATV-1 Used: yes
Oil Checked: yes
Fuel Consumed: 0 gallons = 0 L
Tire Status: good

Kawasaki ATV-2 Used: no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: NO VALUE SUPPLIED

Kawasaki ATV-3 Used: no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: NO VALUE SUPPLIED

Notes/Comments: V'ger is still in SLC. HVAC: nothing to report

Miscellaneous Infrastructure:

Mars Surface Suits: Stacy Sklar used suit-5 and and PLSS-2 with Helmet-2 Grant Waller used suit-3 and PLSS-3 and helmet-1 Iahu-Anat Westenberg used suit, PLSS, and helmet-1 Angie Zabala used suit, PLSS#, and helmet.

Computers/Networking Infrastructure: Internet is working fine. I logged in as administrator on the Hab laptop to set up the printer as the shared and preferred printer. I also set up a connection to the printer on my own laptop. I added the laptops of the others to the LAN so we can share files more easily. I noted down the numbers of the LAN network addresses to make certain I would have those in case anything would upset the network functioning.

Upgrade Work: Grant taped off the wire endings at the generator that were lying around being somewhat of a hazard.

Notes/Comments: yesterday the toilet was clogged. Brave Grant and Stacy unblocked it. Note: more water need to be added to the toilet bowl before flushing. And as the GreenHab is supplying us with enough water, we should not be stingy with that.
