EVA Report
Emily Colvin & Curtis Iwata Reporting

EVA-1:
Emily Colvin Reporting

Time: 1054 (enter airlock for departure) -- 1136 (leave airlock on return)
Crew Members: Emily Colvin (videographer)
Site Location: Just outside the Hab
Transit Mode: Pedestrian

Objectives: To record footage of the Hab from the outside and the surrounding area for Mars Ed.

Lessons Learned: Knee pads would make tripod leveling much easier. Also, I need a smaller PLSS. My balance was so off, I kept almost falling over when I moved. We got it on as securely as possible, but it was just a lot bigger than I needed. A zip tie taped to the index finger is very useful for pushing the record button when using a camera.

EVA-2:
Curtis Iwata Reporting

Time: 1054 (enter airlock for departure) / 1244 (leave airlock on return)
Crew Members: Curtis Iwata, Dean Liao
Site Location: Just outside the Hab
Transit Mode: Pedestrian

Objectives: To test out equipment (Geometrics G856 Magnetometer, Geonics Limited Ground Conductivity Meter)

Lessons Learned:
  • The harnesses that came with the equipment must be worn before the backpacks or we need to come up with a different way to carry the equipment around.
  • The button pusher that we made out of the end of a zip tie was useful when taking pictures.
  • Drink a lot of water before going out on EVAs or incorporate a hydration system.
  • Wear sunglasses.
