Commander's Check-In
Chip Shepherd Reporting
Crew Physical Status: Excellent overall, but tired from the past two early mornings. Crew slept the rest of the morning.
Brief Narrative of Field Mission Results: Assisted NDX-1 team with their pressurized test, and the press from yesterday returned to cover the activity. Power has been out all day, and we brought local support in to assist. Although water supply is good, underground holding tank is almost at capacity (need power to pump it to GreenHab), so we are in conservation mode. Placed simulated emergency air supply masks/holding bags around the Hab (10 total, in crew quarters, toilet, attic, and near stairs). Performed our own Crew 61 Geology/Biology EVA. We began photo documentation task to support Hugh Gregory, Mars Society Historian.
EVA Narrative/Data/Interpretations: Used four crew, ATV, trailer, and generator to assist NDX-1 demonstration. Two other crew Walked to previously scouted location and obtained photos and samples.
Time Departed/Returned from EVA: Assisted NDX-1 out of sim from 5:00 am to 8:00 am. Crew 61 Geology/Biology EVA departure 9:00 am. Returned 10:30 am.
Plans for Tomorrow: May assist NDX-1 team one last time in the field. Conduct EVA with SUNY students and their tools. Analyze findings from Geology/Biology EVA. Begin planning for Yuri Night.
Report Transmission Schedule: Dependent on power availability. We may be unable to send any at all and if computer battery power dies, we'll have to write by hand and transmit later.
Maintenance: Experienced power outage all day; we have been struggling with this all rotation and have brought in local support to help us diagnose and effect solution. For now, the only related limitation I've placed is to not open the refrigerator/freezer. Fresh water supply is good, but without power, the exterior underground gray water tank cannot be pumped and is nearing capacity. So we have lots of water that can come in to the Hab, but nowhere for it to go, except down the toilet. We have instituted conservation measures (for now, no showers) to avoid a tank overflow. While we were in Hanksville, we also filled several of our gasoline cans.
Food/Essential Supplies Inventory: Very good. SUNY students brought many of the items where we were running short (cereal, milk, ice).
Miscellaneous: Fabio was in his element today in front of the cameras. He says Hollywood is the city that he most belongs in , and I have to say I concur 100%. We had two more unplanned visitors today, a father and son on their ATV's.
Support Requested: Assistance with the power situation, if local support and the Crew Engineer are not successful today. SUNY students are sleeping in the attic. There's a four-socket outlet up there near the top of the ladder they'd like to use, but it doesn't work. Do we need to do something to activate it? Perhaps throw the circuit breaker labeled "Old Water Heater" -- right now, it's the only one open.
