EVA #5 Report

February 6, 2008

John Thaler

Time:
Departed: 10:03
Returned: 12:37

Crew Members:
Arthur Guest & John Thaler

Site Location:
1. End of Lowell Highway (UTM 12 S 0520720 4256663)
2. Lith Canyon (UTM 12 S 0519033 4256479)

Transit Mode:
ATV to sites, then walking, ATV to return

Objectives:
Scout sites for geology, biology and extremophile projects.
Conduct ATV training for John.

Lessons Learned:
Go to the bathroom before leaving on EVA.
Wear sunglasses to avoid glare.
Secure hats so they don't fall down in the helmet.

We took a wrong turn and ended up at the end of Lowell Highway which
was a beautiful overlook into the valley. Upon backtracking we found
the turnoff for Lith Canyon and arrived at our planned destination.
In Lith Canyon we noted an interesting stratigraphic series and took
pictures of it to show our geologist upon our return to the Hab. We
also identified two sites in Lith Canyon for the collection of surface
water (ice) for the toxicology study. The area is also rich in
evaporite deposits so it will be a prime location for the collection of
samples for the extremophile project.
