EVA #12 Report

February 9, 2008

Kerry Cupit

Time:
Departed: 8:00 Returned: 11:25

Crew Members:
John Thaler, Michele Faragalli, Kerry Cupit and Arthur Guest

Site Location:
Phobos Peak, Square B1

Transit Mode:
ATV (x2) and by foot

Objectives:
To learn about and use the FDM (field documentation management)
protocol in the field.
To be filmed by visiting Japanese film crew.
To scale Phobos Peak on foot.

Lessons Learned:
FDM informational arm placards are vital to remembering the proper
procedures for conducting FDM-centric field notes.

Tripod with weighted legs would make it easier to take leveled
panoramic images. Compass has an inclinometer built-in that can be
used to level the tripod.

EVA suit battery time is about 3-4 hours on some suits, therefore any
strenuous activity should be planned for the beginning of an EVA to
ensure optimal airflow to the crew member when it is most needed.

Phobos Peak is a beautiful location, especially for panoramic photos!

Kerry indicated that Phobos Peak is a prominent remnant of a
decameter-scale wide fluvial system that extended to the southwest and
east. Ridges extending from Phobos Peak are erosive remnants of this
system, which today take the form of resistant, cemented boulder-sized
blocks of gravely sub-mature sandstone that lie out of situ atop
quickly eroding sediments. Phobos Peak stands as tall as it does
because it hasn't been worn away/broken up by erosion to expose the
softer sediments underneath.
