EVA #14 Report

February 27, 2008

Guy de Carufel

Time:
Departed at 15:58 - Returned at 17:52

Crew Members:
Guy de Carufel, Philip Cunio

Site Location:
Near Hab and Phobos Peak

Transit Mode:
Pedestrian

Objectives:
First Navigation effort to navigate to different waypoints using
knowledge of biased positioning (20m position error added to GPS
position), at a certain frequency of availability (waypoint available
after 1 or 2 minutes).
Objective was to determine how effective navigation could be done with
such constraints.

Lessons Learned:
Navigation using only infrequent positioning and bearing info is
relatively effective. The difficulty arises when trying to find
waypoints visually when within the bias range of the target point.
(More detail in science report.) Lessons learned also included
improvements to be done for next EVA which will repeat the conditions
of EVA14 for evaluating repeatability.
