EVA #15 Report
February 28, 2008
Cassandra Marion
Time:
Departed at 09:41 - Returned at 12:47
Crew Members:
Guy de Carufel, Cassandra Marion
Site Location:
Near Hab and Phobos Peak
Transit Mode:
Pedestrian
Objectives:
Second Navigation effort to navigate to different waypoints using knowledge of biased positioning (up to 80 m position error added to GPS position) at a certain frequency of availability (waypoint available after 1 or 2 minutes).
Objective was to determine how effective navigation could be done with these constraints.
Lessons Learned:
We succeeded in identifying 6 waypoints. Confirmed navigation done with infrequent positioning and bearing info is relatively effective.
The difficulty arises when trying to find waypoints visually when within the bias range of the target point. Cassie learned her sense of direction could be improved. The panoramas and images of the area around the waypoint were very useful; these were not used in the first trial.
We also made some improvements on the waypoint markers as some were washed away by the wind and cowherds. Final trial will begin this afternoon.
