Science Report March 24, 2008 Tulika Raj
Project: EVA: Incline Study Preparation
Personnel: Tulika Raj
Incline test was conducted at 3 locations with three volunteer subjects from the crew. The data was recorded based on the rubric discussed earlier for the comfort of standing and bending at various inclinations, on various soil types during EVA.
Soil Radiation study was also conducted in the vicinity of the Hab. The Corer and the Radiation meter were tested for use during EVA.
Technical/Equipment Issues: Incline Test: T-square, protractor, string Radiation Test: Soil Corer and Radiation meter
Discussion / Questions :
Inclinations of 0º, 35º and 45º were included in the study. The soil type varied from crumbly red dried clay soil and hard soil to loose rocky soil. The easiest location thus far was at 0º inclination and most difficult was at 45º inclination. Further testing will be conducted at other inclinations during future EVA.
The radiation study is a lot more difficult in application than in theory, as the application of the Arctic section was carried out by other people with a much better understanding of geology. Today was very truncated, as the site Emily selected turned out to have rock about an inch under the surface. Radiation measurements were taken at surface level, showing an approximate reading of 1940 cpm. Translation from cpm into dpm will have to wait until she has a better idea of the source of the radiation, energy spectrum, etc. Questions have been sent to some of the people who were actually doing the coring for the first part of the study to provide guidance (apart from finding not-rock areas).
