EVA Report
Emily Colvin Reporting

EVA #5 Report

Time:
Departed: 1206
Returned: 1455

Crew Members:
Emily Colvin, Elisha Sanders, Tulika Raj

Site Location:
Box Canyon, north-east of Hab

Transit Mode:
ATV

Objectives:
Testing radio capabilities.

Lessons Learned:
We had radio communication with the Hab all the way to the canyon, with
our radios on the Low power setting. Once we walked down from the
parking area/turnaround, we had more sporadic communication, but we
believe that with slightly higher radio power, we would have had great
communication everywhere, but we were gone 3 hours without having to
change our radio batteries, which was a bonus, since changing radio
batteries in gloves is special.

Also learned that the commander has no sense of direction at all and a
route should be programmed in an extra GPS to be sent with an EVA to
areas farther from the Hab. Trying to get directions communicated over
radio using a map without waypoints with our positions and the waypoint
database is rather difficult and gets people annoyed.
