EVA #5 Report

January 26, 2010

Luis Saraiva

Time:
1546- 1621

Crew Members:
Luis Saraiva, Carla Haroz, Mike Moran

Site Location:
Sagan Street [Between Shriparelli Highway and Copernicus Highway]

Transit Mode:
ATV and Walking

Objectives:
Get used to ride the ATVs wearing the Space Suits, improve our
navigation techniques and collect some biological specimens.

Lessons Learned:
When boots get muddy it is harder to feel the brake pedal [on the right
hand side of the ATVs], so try to scrape it off.
One has to slow down to communicate via the radios.
If driving towards the sun, make sure one wears sunglasses or ski
goggles to cut the glare.
If the radios are on VOX mode, the sound of the engine is also
transmitted, so manual control of the radios is preferred.
If driving over snow [especially when on slopes] make sure you are
extra careful since the snow makes the ATV slide when turning. To
circumvent this, keep the ATV in a low gear [1 or 2].
